Roof Leaks and a Solar Company Out of Business: Angella’s Story

Going solar is often presented as a way to take control of your energy costs. You sign a contract, install the panels, and expect your system to produce the energy you were promised. But what happens when the system does not perform as expected, your new roof starts leaking, and the company responsible for your installation suddenly disappears?

That is what happened to Angela.

Angela and her husband decided to invest in solar after Victory Solar approached them at their home. Like many homeowners, they were interested in solar because they wanted to reduce their electricity costs. The company explained that they could finance the project, which made the investment feel more manageable.

Before moving forward, Angela also raised an important concern: their roof was already nearing the end of its expected life.

A New Roof Was Added to the Solar Project

Angela told Victory Solar that her roof had approximately five to seven years of useful life remaining. She wanted to understand what would happen when they eventually needed to replace it.

She was initially told that removing and reinstalling the solar panels would come with an additional cost. For Angela, that was a dealbreaker.

Rather than move forward under those terms, she explained that she would not be willing to pay for the panels to be removed and reinstalled only a few years later. According to Angela, Victory Solar then included the cost of a new roof as part of the project.

The solar company also told Angela and her husband that their system would provide approximately 102% energy coverage. The additional production was intended to account for the gradual degradation of the panels over time.

On paper, the arrangement appeared to address both of their concerns: they would receive a new roof and a solar system designed to produce enough energy to cover their needs.

The reality was very different.

The Solar System Was Not Producing What Was Promised

After the installation, Angela and her husband discovered that their system was producing far less energy than they expected.

Angela said they were not even seeing 50% coverage.

She contacted Victory Solar repeatedly to ask why the system was not performing as promised. Instead of resolving the issue, Angela said the company suggested that they were simply using more electricity because they had solar.

That explanation did not make sense to her.

They had purchased the system based on specific representations about its expected production. Now, they were still facing significant electricity costs while also paying for the solar system.

The problems did not stop there.

The New Roof Started Leaking

The roof installed as part of the project also became a major source of frustration.

Angela said that the new roof developed leaks that she had never experienced before. She repeatedly contacted Victory Solar about the problems, including recurring leaks that continued over approximately two years.

One particular leak returned multiple times.

Eventually, Angela reached out again after the same leak resurfaced for roughly the fifth time. This time, however, she received no response.

She called.

Nothing.

She sent emails to multiple addresses she could find.

Still nothing.

Then her husband went to Victory Solar’s office.

The company was gone.

Victory Solar Had Closed Its Doors

Angela discovered that Victory Solar had gone out of business. She also learned that the company had filed for bankruptcy.

For Angela and her husband, this created an entirely new problem.

They had been told they were receiving a 25-year parts-and-labor warranty on their solar equipment. Now, the company responsible for that warranty was no longer available.

Angela reached out to other solar companies to ask whether someone else could take over the loan, maintain the system, and help address the problems. She also tried to find information about the company that had installed the roof.

According to Angela, Victory Solar had not provided her with the roofing company’s contact information, leaving her with even more questions about how to address the ongoing leaks.

Meanwhile, the roof was only a few years old, and Angela and her husband were forced to pay out of pocket for repairs.

The situation had become overwhelming.

Finding Prevost Law Firm

During this difficult period, Angela happened to see a Prevost Law Firm post on Facebook discussing homeowners who were dealing with problems involving solar companies and solar loans.

The timing caught her attention.

She had already tried to contact Victory Solar. The solar company was gone. She was dealing with a poorly performing solar system, roof problems, and questions about her loan and warranty.

So Angela decided to reach out.

Her thinking was simple: she wanted to find out whether anything could be done.

After reviewing her situation, Prevost Law Firm represented Angela in a legal claim against her solar lender.

The terms of Angela’s settlement prevent her from discussing the specific details of the resolution. However, she shared that she was very happy with the outcome.

Most importantly, she described the feeling of finally having the situation behind her as “a big weight” being lifted from her shoulders.

Sometimes, You Have to Start by Asking

Angela’s case took time. She said she hired Prevost Law Firm in August 2024, and the process took approximately two years.

It required patience, but Angela said the wait was worth it for her.

She also emphasized something important for other homeowners facing similar problems: you may not know whether anything can be done until you ask.

When Angela first contacted Prevost Law Firm, she did not know what the answer would be. She understood that no outcome could be guaranteed. She simply wanted to tell someone what had happened and find out whether the firm could help.

That initial conversation ultimately led to legal representation and a resolution that Angela described as extremely meaningful to her.

She also expressed appreciation for the Prevost Law Firm team, particularly Jamie, the attorney who worked closely with her throughout the case. Angela said that the people she interacted with throughout the process were responsive and helpful.

Dealing With Solar Problems? Find Out What Your Options Are

Angela’s experience highlights how complicated a solar dispute can become when multiple problems happen at once.

A system may not produce the energy you were promised. A contractor may leave work unfinished or perform work that creates additional problems. A warranty may become difficult to use when a company closes its doors. And you may still be responsible for a solar loan even when the company that sold you the system is no longer operating.

If you are dealing with similar problems, you do not have to figure out your legal options alone.

Prevost Law Firm offers a no-cost claim review for homeowners dealing with potential solar disputes. Tell us what happened, and our team can review your situation and explain whether we may be able to help.

There is no guarantee that every case can be taken or that every claim will result in a particular outcome. But, as Angela’s experience shows, sometimes the first step is simply making the call and finding out what options may be available.
