If you’ve been searching online for help with a solar dispute, you’ve probably seen advertisements promising loan cancellation, debt relief, refunds, or fast results.
Unfortunately, not every company offering “solar claim” services provides the same level of assistance.
Some companies are law firms. Others are marketing companies selling leads to law firms. Some help you prepare documents. Others expect you to handle significant parts of the legal process yourself. And some take your money and do nothing.
Before you pay anyone, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re buying.
Solar Claim Horror Story
The below is a redacted quote from a member of one of our Senior Legal Assistants, with the solar lawsuit company name and the loan servicer name redacted.
“I feel sick to my stomach hearing after getting off the phone with this couple on social security who hired [Company] in June 2025 to help them with the solar cancellation. [Company] charged them $2000 for a CONSULTATION (just to see if they have a case).
They are NOT a law firm. They do not have a phone number. If she wants to speak with someone, she needs to send an email, and someone will send an email back saying someone will call you and this day and time. Each time she wants to address something, it takes weeks.
After finding out they have a case, she had to pay them an additional $5000+ to have an attorney represent her. SHE had to send out her own demand letter and file for arbitration HERSELF. The “legal assistant” helping her had her send it to [the loan servicer she is suing]. She had no idea about the investor pools at first and then [Company] told her to write a letter to [the loan servicer she is suing] asking who the loan holder was. Of course, she did not get a response.
The attorney who was originally going to represent her sent her a letter saying he couldn’t represent her. Then another attorney was going to represent her and the day before she was to speak with him, he backed out also.
She can not afford to retain us until she can get at least the $5000 back from [Company], which she can not call. Her husband is retired and she works part time and they are on social security.
This is how some of these other “Solar Cancellation” companies work. I can not imagine how many other people are in the same situation as this woman.”
Not Every Company Is a Law Firm
One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that every company advertising solar cancellation or solar claim services is actually a law firm.
Many are not.
Some companies provide consulting services, expert reports, or case evaluations, then refer clients to an attorney later—or require the client to find legal representation separately.
That doesn’t necessarily make those services wrong. But it’s important to understand the difference before paying for them.
Ask Exactly What You Will Be Responsible For
Before hiring anyone, ask questions like:
- Who prepares my legal documents?
- Who sends my demand letter?
- Who files my arbitration or lawsuit?
- Who identifies the correct companies or lenders involved in my case?
- Will I have an attorney representing me?
- Can I call someone if I have questions?
- What happens if the attorney cannot take my case?
If the answer to any of those questions is “you,” make sure you’re comfortable taking on those responsibilities.
Understand What You’re Paying For
Another important question is:
What exactly do my fees cover?
Depending on the company, your payment may be for:
- A consultation
- A case evaluation
- Expert reports
- Consulting services
- Legal representation
- Or some combination of the above
These are very different services.
Understanding exactly what you’re purchasing can help avoid surprises later.
Compare Your Options Carefully
Every case is different, and no attorney can guarantee a particular outcome.
These questions intended to help consumers understand the differences between various types of services so they can make an informed decision.

Be Cautious of Extraordinary Claims
If an advertisement promises guaranteed results, unusually large recoveries, or sounds too good to be true, take the time to ask questions before signing anything.
A reputable company should clearly explain:
- what services they provide,
- what they do not provide,
- who will represent you,
- and what your responsibilities will be.
Understanding those answers before you hire anyone can save significant time, money, and frustration later.
Questions to Ask Before You Hire Any Solar Claim Company
If you’re comparing different companies, don’t just compare the price. Ask what services are actually included.
Some organizations provide legal representation. Others provide consulting services, expert reports, or case evaluations. Some expect clients to complete portions of the legal process themselves, while others handle those steps on the client’s behalf.
Before signing an agreement, make sure you understand exactly who will be responsible for each stage of your case. The answers to these questions can significantly affect both your experience and the progress of your claim.
Before You Sign Anything
Ask for a written explanation of exactly what services are included, who will represent you, what responsibilities you will have, and what additional costs, if any, may arise later. Understanding those answers before you hire anyone can save significant time, expense, and frustration.
