Solar energy is an exciting prospect for many homeowners, promising reduced energy costs and a smaller carbon footprint.
However, without the right guidance, this dream can quickly turn into a legal and financial nightmare.
Recently, we sat down with one of our clients, Shad Reed, to discuss his experience dealing with a solar system that was misrepresented and ultimately failed to deliver on its promises.
The Nightmare: Misrepresentation and Abandonment
Shad’s journey began with excitement about solar energy in Arizona. Unfortunately, the company that sold him the system failed to perform basic due diligence regarding how local electric companies integrate solar programs.

The result was a cascade of issues:
- Incompatibility: Shad was sold a system that was completely incompatible with his local utility company’s operations.
- Overselling: The system installed was approximately 200% larger than what was actually needed for his home.
- Zero Accountability: Shortly after installation, the solar company went out of business, leaving Shad with no way to claim warranties or seek repairs.
“I felt pretty helpless at first,” Shad recalled. “When you hire experts… you tend to want to try to trust people that are in business to do that… I was pretty disappointed in it.”.
Why Professional Legal Help Matters
Facing a difficult situation with a defunct company and a non-functional system, Shad and his wife began researching their options. After interviewing several firms, they chose Provo Law Firm.
Shad highlighted several key factors that set Provost Law Firm apart:
- Responsiveness and Professionalism: The firm was prompt and quick to respond to every request.
- Transparent Process: Attorneys were thorough in walking the Reeds through the litigation process and what to expect at every stage.
- No-Pressure Advocacy: During settlement negotiations, the firm prioritized the client’s comfort over a quick finish. “I just felt there wasn’t really any pressure to settle… with the first offer that came through,” Shad noted.
Achieving the Result
While legal processes can often be lengthy, Shad’s case moved more efficiently than he anticipated. After hiring the firm in November 2024, the case reached a successful settlement by March 2026.
Though the specific terms of the settlement remain confidential, Shad expressed his satisfaction with the outcome.
It was a good deal and it was right about what we were hoping that we were going to be able to… recover from the whole process.
Advice for Other Homeowners
For those currently struggling with a solar panel case, Shad offers this advice:
- Do Your Due Diligence: Research firms thoroughly before making a decision.
- Set Clear Goals: Write down what you hope to achieve before you start making phone calls.
- Don’t Wait: While these processes can seem daunting, having professional representation can make a world of difference.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, know that you don’t have to face it alone. Professional legal guidance can help turn a “helpless” situation into a successful recovery.
